  2.                           WELCOME TO CATDISK V6.00
  3.  
  4. If you received this release on a floppy disk, please make a copy of the
  5. original, put the original in a safe place and work from the copy.
  6.

  9. As CATDISK has evolved during its development, it has grown in size and all of
  10. the programs and documentation no longer fit on a 360K floppy disk.  The
  11. program files are provided in a self-extracting LHA archive file called
  12. CATPROGS.EXE and the documentation is in a similar file called CATDOCS.EXE.
  13.  
  14. If you are running on low density floppy disks, do the following:
  15.  
  16.  1) Put the CATDISK disk in drive B:
  17.  2) Put a blank, formatted disk in drive A:
  18.  3) Log onto Drive A:
  19.  4) Type "B:CATPROGS" <Enter> (without the quotes, of course).
  20.  5) The program files will be uncompressed to the blank disk in A:
  21.  6) Remove that diskette and label it "CATDISK PROGRAM FILES".
  22.  7) Insert another blank diskette and type "B:CATDOCS" <Enter>.
  23.  8) The documentation files will be decompressed to the blank disk in A:
  24.  9) Copy the file README.1ST to the disk in A:
  25. 10) Remove that diskette and label it "CATDISK DOCUMENTATION FILES".
  26.  
  27. All other forms of disk should have enough capacity to accept all of the
  28. files.  Simply execute CATPROGS and CATDOCS.EXE from the current directory and
  29. delete CATPROGS.EXE and CATDOCS.EXE when done.

  62. Due to the popularity that CATDISK has achieved, and the resulting workload in
  63. keeping up with correspondence, the development of CATDISK PLUS has been
  64. significantly delayed.  Work is progressing, albeit slowly, as we adapt to
  65. the increased workload.  Additionally, as development progresses, new ideas
  66. pop up that are too good to pass up, both on the shareware version of CATDISK,
  67. as well as in CATDISK PLUS.

  69. Recently, we have been receiving pre-paid orders for CATDISK PLUS from a fair
  70. number of individuals and corporations.  Unfortunately, these orders cannot be
  71. processed before the product is ready.  Before ordering CATDISK PLUS, please
  72. check with us either by voice at (519) 888-6763, or on our bulletin board
  73. system, The Shareware Connection at (519) 888-6924 for information on CATDISK
  74. PLUS's availability.

  83. To print this README.1ST file, the revision history, the CATDISK user manual,
  84. or any of the registration forms, run the program PRINTDOC.EXE, contained in
  85. the self-extracting documentation file.  This is a menu driven program that is
  86. capable of printing the longer files, such as the user manual in a two-sided
  87. format (i.e. on both sides of the page).  The documentation files and
  88. PRINTDOC.EXE must be in the same directory.

  92. Please read at least the section on configuring CATDISK in the configuration
  93. section of the manual.

  95. One important note to consider in the user manual.  When ARCHIVE files are
  96. mentioned, it is in reference to any type of file that contains a collection of
  97. files, compressed or not.  This currently includes ARC, ARJ, DWC, HYP, LBR,
  98. LZS, LZH, PAK, ZIP, and ZOO files.

  102.           IF YOU ARE UPGRADING TO THIS RELEASE FROM V3.61 OR LATER
  103.  
  104. Before copying the new program files to your work disk, you might want to
  105. rename the executable file from the previous installation (CATDISK.COM or
  106. CATDISK.EXE) to another name.  The new configuration utility, CDISKCFG.EXE
  107. now has the ability to read the configuration information from the release that
  108. you were using for easy installation into this release.  This can save you some
  109. time in setting the program up for your preferences, particularly if you've
  110. customized all the screen colors.

  112. When you run CDISKCFG, hit <F8> and follow the prompts.

  118. IF YOU WERE USING A VERSION OF CATDISK PRIOR TO V2.10
  119.  
  120. As there is now more information being stored in the summary file, you will
  121. have to discard your old catalog files and start from scratch.  Any .SUM files
  122. created with CATDISK versions before V2.10 are NOT compatible with this one.

  125. IF YOU WERE USING A VERSION OF CATDISK FROM V2.10 to V3.28
  126.  
  127. Starting with CATDISK V3.50, file comments are fully supported.  You do *NOT*
  128. have to purge your old catalog files and start over... just run the program
  129. CDISKCVT.EXE on each catalog file that you have, and it will be converted to
  130. the new format.

  132. The syntax of this command is:

  134. CDISKCVT catalog_name
  135.  
  136. - where catalog_name is the name of the catalog file to be converted.
  137.   (do NOT include the filename extension of .DTA on the command line)
  138.

  140. If you were using V3.50 or later, you do _NOT_ need to run this conversion
  141. program - your files will work as they are.

  147.       IF YOU'VE EXPERIENCED MISALIGNED FIELDS ON PRINTED REPORTS
  148.  
  149. Some disk labelling programs have an annoying habit of placing null characters
  150. at the end of a volume label.  While this is not a fatal problem, it can have
  151. a nasty effect on the printed reports that CATDISK produces by causing
  152. misalignment of some of the fields.
  153.  
  154. The program CLEANCAT.EXE has been provided to correct this problem in catalog
  155. files that have been created with V3.50 to 4.10, or those that have been
  156. converted by the above mentioned CDISKCVT.EXE utility.
  157.  
  158. If you have noticed your printed reports appearing in this strange manner,
  159. CLEANCAT can help you.  This program will simply change all the null characters
  160. to spaces, which will appear correctly on your printer.
  161.  
  162. The syntax for CLEANCAT is:
  163.  
  164. CLEANCAT catalog_name
  165.  
  166. - where catalog_name is the name of the catalog file to be "cleaned up".
  167.   (do NOT include the filename extension of .DTA or .SUM on the command line)
  168.  
  169. If you created your catalog files with a release after V4.10, the corrective
  170. procedures have been built right into the program, therefore this procedure
  171. will not be necessary.

  179. Please read the note in the configuration section regarding setting CATDISK up
  180. to function correctly with your system, particularly the section dealing with
  181. the disk cache.  Failure to do so could result in lost data on your floppy
  182. diskettes.
